Hnefatafl is a Celtic and German board game played by two players; one attacker and one defender. It is like all tafl-games played on a chess-like board that varied sizes between 11×11 squares and all odd-even numbers up to 19×19 squares.

The white player plays the defender and starts with all their tokens in the middle of the board. The white player wins if the king stands on one of the black players starting squares, or in one of the corners of the board.

The black player plays the attacker and wins if the king dies. The king is killed if it is surrounded by four black tokens, or three black tokens and the edge of the board.
